Activities

A trip to Tanzania is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and we want you to experience all the wonders that our country has to offer. We highly recommend all our guests to choose at least one optional activity that will show you a side of Tanzania not seen from the vehicle in game drives. From hikes, waterfall visits, and hot springs to coffee tours, these activities let you connect with the landscape in ways game drives alone can’t provide. On safari, options like night game drives, walking safaris, or balloon safaris add a whole new dimension. These activities, while having an extra fee, completely change your safari experience and perspective on Tanzania!

Hot air balloon safaris

A balloon safari in the iconic Serengeti National Park will make your Tanzania safari a memorable experience. You rise at sunrise and gently fly over the endless plains of the Serengeti. The hot air balloon floats at treetop height above the baobabs and acacias so that you can see the animals nearby. Watching the wildlife below from your balloon is a fascinating and peaceful experience that comes with breathtaking panoramic views.Hot Air Balloons invoke feelings of thrill, exhilaration and trepidation. It is expensive, but offers unrivalled views of the landscape and wildlife.

Chemka Hot Springs

Maji Moto, known locally as Kikuletwa Hotsprings, is paradisiac oasis amidst the Tanzanian savannah, offers captivating, Bounty-styled views, crystal-clean water and dense vegetation around. Located in 2-hour drive from Moshi (Tanzania) – the main climbing hub of the region – Chemka Hot Springs is the best place to visit after a Kilimanjaro hike or a safari adventure. Chemka oasis is a unique phenomenon – it is the only place in Tanzania (and most likely in the whole East Africa), where the groundwater actively interacted with geothermal sources, forming a number of small lakes with warm, never-stagnating water, which purity is not inferior to the best Dominican or Maldivian resorts.

Materuni Waterfalls & Village

A tour to Materuni Village and Waterfalls is a great way to spend a day away from the bustle of town life. The walk to Materuni Waterfall offers a glimpse into the nature of Tanzania allowing you either to prepare your body for the forthcoming climb to Kilimanjaro or ease your muscles after the climb. The Materuni Waterfall tour starts with a walk through the area adjacent to the waterfall, rich in beautiful natural scenery of Tanzania. It is an opportunity to see how local fruit like avocados, mangos, lemons, and bananas grow, as well as learn some of the local history, traditions, village economy, agricultural and cultural life. When you get to the waterfall, you can refresh yourself in the natural pool, so swimsuits will come in handy!

It is an hour flight experience from Arusha local airport or Kilimanjaro International Airport and back to the same airport you flew from. So, forget the myth that flying over Mount Kilimanjaro is dangerous because a plane will be pulled down to the crater. Welcome to the reality. Chemka Hot Springs

Many guests wonder what they can do after arriving on an early flight or how to spend their last day before a late departure. One of our favorite activities we recommend is a visit to Chemka Hot Springs. Located just an hour from Kilimanjaro Airport, these springs are a magical oasis of warm, crystal-clear waters surrounded by lush greenery. About 15 minutes past the airport, this journey takes you down a rough road for about 45 minutes, offering glimpses into local Tanzanian village life and passing several iconic baobab trees along the way. This park is located just over 30 minutes from Arusha city center. Upon entering the park gates, you drive through woodlands until you reach the northern region. Led by an armed ranger, the walking safari begins with an examination of various animal skulls which offers a fascinating introduction to the biodiversity of northern Tanzania. After the lesson, you stroll over bridges and through lush woodlands to reach an open field where you are most likely to see giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, warthogs and more.

Napuru Waterfalls

Arusha is a beautiful city in the foothills of Mt. Meru that stays lush and green year round. Many Lion King guests inquire about activities in and around the city, and our number one recommendation is Napuru Waterfalls. This is a truly special hidden gem, located just 20 minutes above the city! For those seeking a longer adventure, you can extend the hike with an additional hour-long trek to a city viewing point, or choose to hike back up to the starting point.
